    Description

Offered for sale is a vintage Omega brass hippocampus (seahorse) store display/collector item - the symbol/logo for the companies Seamaster and Speedmaster watches. These watches were both featured in James Bond movies of the era. This particular design seahorse  was created for Omega by engraver Jean-Pierre Borle in 1958. He was inspired by images of  Venetian hippocampus,  including the beautiful oarlock decorations on the gondolas. From my research  I am not sure whether this piece was used as a store display or issued as a very limited collector item. It dates to the late 1950's-early 1960's time era. The brass hippocampus is mounted on a weighted wood base which looks to have been repainted more recently. It is in overall good vintage condition with wear, surface imperfections, and darkened patina that is consistent with age and use. The brass seahorse alone measures 8" long, 7" high, and 1 1/2" in depth. Including the wood base it measures 9 3/4" high, 9 1/2" wide, and 4" in depth.
